Tape roll’s role in 2015 Ford Mustang design
There’s nothing quite like that brand new roll of adhesive tape, straight from the cellophane wrapping, is there? That sweet, tangy aroma of the glue; the squeaky-clean backing…it all comes together, and suddenly, the world is your oyster, ready to be adhered together. You know what we’re talking about…
And when it comes to design concepts in the automobile world, coming up with sleek lines and edgy touches to any given car concept, guess what is commonly used in providing a base for the keystone of design? You got it–TAPE!
“Great design is about proportions,” explains Kemal Curic, Ford exterior design manager. “From the beginning, we need to focus on creating the right structural lines – the skeleton of the car. Then our job is to tailor the vehicle body to enhance the figure. This is a process of editing every single line to find the perfect balance of concave and convex angles. We achieve this on the clay model, and tape is what we use to decide which lines to move.”
So, with all the high-tech design capacity today’s technological world offers, Ford Mustang designers still relied upon a faithful stand-by to get the job done. Simply. Awesome.
“Tape gives us a defined line that is like a carpenter laying a level line on a building,” said Larry Pelowski, Ford master modeler, exterior design. “So when the designers put tape on the model, there is no question what their intent is.”
Just how important was tape to the design of the new 2015 Mustang? So significant such that the design team consumed enough bonding strips of magical adherence, it would result in a span of 155 miles if placed in linear fashion. Too cool!
