S302 model lineup, the 302 Yellow Label touts an incredible list of
features in a single package. Keeping with the formula that Saleen uses
to produce its instantly recognizable vehicles, the Yellow Label model
adds to the value element through increased horsepower, handling and
styling. Utilizing a 302 cubic inch V8 engine this pony produces 715HP
through a twin screw supercharger that keeps power where it should be,
on demand. In addition to increased horsepower, each Saleen Yellow label
model also receives additional upgrades including Aerodynamics and
Aesthetics, braking, and Saleen specific suspension components that all
work together balancing out the ‘Speed, Science and Style’ trifecta that

When Anderson Ford’s Motorsport department set out to create the most
horsepower out of any Cold Air Kit, they found it’s not a small task
especially with all the great companies out there that make Cold Air
Kits.</div>

They
decided to call in Ron Anderson, NHRA Div. Champion, NHRA US Nationals
Winner and NMRA World Champion to be part of the team to work on this
project. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Their #1 goal was to make the most horsepower on a stock 5.0L
Mustang with a tune and they wanted to do it under “real world” testing.
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
With their DynoJet Dyno it was easy to go out and test all the
competition first to see where they needed to set the bar. After that
was done they went to work on creating an all-aluminum PowerPipe®.</div>
<br />Why
aluminum? Because in the real world aluminum is cooler and cold air
makes more power. After many hours of testing they came up with the
right combination of bends and angles to maximize the flow. Next they
knew they didn’t want an air box because they wanted the maximum amount
of flow to their air cleaner. They also knew they needed to keep the
heat off of the air cleaner so they made a heat shield to get maximum
flow to the engine. <br />
<br />With those combinations and a custom tune
by their Motorsport Director, Brian Koestner, using the SCT software,
Anderson Ford Motorsport can make the claim they have created the most
horsepower out of any of the Cold Air Kits on the market today. Plus,
they made the most horsepower throughout the RPM range.<br />
It’s astounding
they did all of their testing with the hood closed which would be real
world driving. <br />
<br />Their goal is to have their new PowerPipe® available by the end of 2015 or first part of 2016.<br />

ROUSH has taken the F-150’s aggressive appearance to the next level with
a host of body components including a ROUSH Front Grille with Clearance
Lightning, a ROUSH Front Bumper Cover, ROUSH Fender Flares with

A native Detroiter, Clor paid his journalism dues with a 15-year editing career at The Detroit News before joining the staff of AutoWeek magazine, where he spent more than six years writing road tests and penning auto features as Deputy Managing Editor. John then jumped into the corporate automotive public relations world in 1995, when he became the Communications Manager for the Special Vehicle Team, Ford’s high-profile, high performance vehicle group. There, he helped developed media programs, dealer training, a consumer-facing web site, and marketing materials, including an award-winning newsletter, SVT News. Intrigued by the explosive growth of the Internet, John returned to journalism in 1999 for a three-year stint as Detroit Editor for the Edmunds.com auto web site.<br />
Clor’s broad-based automotive knowledge and engaging personality have earned him recurring guest spots on radio and TV, including CBS, CNN, PBS, The History Channel, A&E, Tech TV, SpeedVision, ABC Radio News, NPR, Michigan Public Radio, WJR, Public Reality Radio, and many other national and local media outlets. As a freelancer, John founded a communications firm called “Cars in Context” specializing in custom automotive writing, editing, research and consulting to a variety of outlets, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune as well as cable TV's Modern Marvels and Mad Men. He even hosts his own Cars In Context TV talk show on his local cable access station.<br />
After returning to Ford in 2002 and managing its SVT and Shelby GT500 website for more than a half-decade, John penned and published a hardcover history book titled The Mustang Dynasty, whose 2007 and 2009 print runs both sold out. Today, John manages the Ford Performance Group of enthusiast organizations, a club outreach marketing program for Ford Racing, and oversees enthusiast content for the <a href="http://www.fordracing.com/">www.FordRacing.com</a> web site as an Account Director for PCGCampbell, a Dearborn-based marketing communications agency. Still active in several car clubs, Clor is a director of the SVT Owners Association, serves as editor of its critically acclaimed SVT Enthusiast club magazine, and is the proud owner of two ’70s-era Mustangs – one of which he calls “a long-term project.”<br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The first package calibration to come from Roush is called the Phase 1 and based upon the well-proven Eaton TVS2300 based supercharger.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Created for the 2015 and up 5.0 liter Mustang V8, it brings 627 horsepower at 6900 rpm and 540 pound-feet of torque at 4700 rpm. Maximum boost comes in at 9 psi and 93 octane premium fuel is required.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br />Looking around under the hood, packaging of the supercharger and its associated hardware may be familiar to earlier iterations though it’s nuanced a little for the 2015 Mustang’s narrower engine compartment up front.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">More attractive than the factory GT air-filter assembly is the Roush air-intake box which comes with the supercharger package and houses a conical filter inside. It uses some parts from the factory box, but has better breathing capacity throughout.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">A twin 60mm throttle body breathes air into the supercharger which is cooled underneath with an air-to-water intercooler which is integral with the Roush aluminum intake manifold. Higher flow fuel injectors and modified fuel rails are installed for increased fuel flow.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The supercharger’s 85 mm pulley and drive belt uses a modified first-sheave accessory drive circuit. Additional pulleys added here allow the supercharger and A/C compressor to share the same belt. Other accessories in the second-sheave belt circuit remain unchanged.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Aside the factory radiator coolant reservoir is the second one which is part of the supercharger package for the intercooler’s radiator circuit. For 2015, Roush increased the size of the intercooler radiator for better thermal efficiency.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Overall the installation is very OEM in appearance and execution as expected. Roush Performance has long lived in the OEM engineering environment and their work shows it. The calibration is 50-state legal whether you buy the production car or install the package on your Mustang.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Roush showed their hand at the SEMA Show with additional concept models based on the Mustang such as the Trak Pak Stage 3. Under hood was a Roush-Yates fully forged engine with a higher tune supercharger package good for 777 horsepower. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This shows room for Phase 2 and even Phase 3 versions of the versatile TVS2300 supercharger package when installed on fortified engines which can take the boost and fuel mixtures.</span><br />

Every automobile performance enthusiast at some point wants to know how much horsepower his or her hotrod has after investing countless hours and dollars in order to make it unique. The easiest and most direct method of acquiring that information is by using a chassis dyno. There are engine dyno’s that measure horsepower at the flywheel. This “flywheel” number is
representative of how the O.E.M. manufacturers rate and advertise the
performance numbers that you see in magazines, on TV, and in the
showroom of your favorite brand of vehicle. Unfortunately, for the
vehicle owner, it’s not practical to remove the engine from an already
assembled unit, install it on an engine dynamometer, test it , and then
re-install it in the vehicle chassis. Money and time makes it cost
prohibitive. It’s just not practical.<br />
<br />
The manufacturer however, has the advantage of being able to test the engine assembly before it is<br />
Installed and becomes a finished automobile, ready to drive. The
alternative method of acquiring the horsepower number is by installing
the vehicle on a chassis dynamometer. It’s a much simpler method because
it only requires that the rear wheels to be driven onto the rollers,
the vehicle anchored with tie down straps at four corners, attach an
electrical pick up lead, and an exhaust gas sniffer hose in the exhaust
pipe, and a reference listing of performance upgrades. Once the vehicle
has been aligned properly, and the retention straps are tightened, the
vehicle is ready for testing. The driving procedure for the chassis dyno
is similar to driving on the road except for the fact that you are
sitting stationary and only the rear wheels are rotating. Something to
keep in mind is that the horsepower value obtained on the chassis dyno
will be less than the resulting number obtained on an engine dyno. This
lower number is due to the energy absorption requirements to transfer
motion from the crankshaft to the rear wheels. This lower horsepower
number can easily be adjusted to the flywheel equivalent using a simple
formula. Divide the rear wheel HP valve obtained at a drive ratio of 1:1
by .85. This will result in the approximate flywheel HP equivalent. <br />
<br />
The industry offers several choices of chassis dynamometers, each of
them utilizing their own unique design. The two main engineering types
are the inertia dyno and the load dyno. In addition, there are
competitive name brands of each type. In this discussion we will focus
on the type or design, not the brand. The two types most commonly used
are the inertia dyno and the load dyno. Both designs will measure
horsepower at the rear wheels. Each design will provide accurate and
repeatable values, but the values are calculated using different engineering designs and therefore the actual HP “number” recorded by each type will be different , but does that really matter. I will explain…..<br />
<br />
Inertia dynos extrapolate horsepower output by analyzing the dyno drum's
acceleration rate using a sophisticated accelerometer and computer
software. An inertia dyno works only when the car is accelerating. It
uses heavy roller drums of known mass mounted on bearings that allow
them to freely rotate. A vehicle is placed in position on the dyno with
the drive wheels sitting on the rollers. The car is placed in gear and
accelerated at wide-open throttle. It takes a certain amount of time and
force for the tires to accelerate the heavy rollers. The laws of
physics state that acceleration rate is directly proportional to how
much power the tires place on the heavy roller to get it to rotate. <br />
<br />
The dyno software monitors roller velocity and the time it takes to
arrive at a rate of acceleration and estimates power at the rear wheels.
Using data from an engine-mounted inductive probe, the software then
graphs the power and gear-compensated engine torque against engine rpm.
Some inertia dynos also attempt to estimate flywheel power and torque
numbers based on mathematical models and data from additional sensors.<br />
<br />
A pure inertia-only dyno can only calculate power by measuring the rate
of change in acceleration (that's why it's called an inertia dyno), so
it can't do loaded tests or step-tests. The inability to perform load
tests makes it difficult to accurately establish optimum timing and fuel
curves for use under varying driving conditions. On today's inertial
dynos, the static roller weight or resistance isn't adjustable to match
vehicle weight; depending on the dyno software and whether the inertial
test function can be combined with a strain gauge to effectively change
the rollers' inertia trim-as is possible on higher-end multifunction
dynos-extremely light or heavy vehicles might fall off the curve, and
turbocharged engines won't build boost as they do in the real world. On
the other hand, with mainstream vehicles weighing around 3,500 pounds,
the results are repeatable with minimal setup time. Dynojet is the most
common pure-inertia dyno in use today; however, some of its newer models
also have an eddy-current option. Load dyno’s, also known as an
eddy-current dyno. This type of dyno controls the brake/absorber using
electric current instead of fluid, measuring torque output and
calculating horsepower based on a strain-gauge. Electric current
provides much more <br />
precise control and minimal spool-up lag-time, but you need a gonzo
electric supply and the dyno itself is more expensive than other types.
Top-flight eddy-current dynos are used for sophisticated R&D and
emissions testing where dead-nuts accuracy is extremely important. They
are especially useful in calibrating electronic engine-management
systems at varying vehicle loads. <br />
On the other hand, utilizing the capabilities of this dyno to its full
potential requires a high degree of skill and setup time. Mustang and
SuperFlow are among those companies marketing high-end eddy-current
dynos. Some eddy-current dynos can also be run in "pure inertia mode,"
but then they have the same drawbacks as any other pure inertia dyno.
Many factors that influence test accuracy are common to all dynos,
including engine dynos; these include temperature, airflow, barometric
pressure, and torque calibration. But on chassis dynos, many additional
factors can affect the results, <br />
factors much harder to control than those typically encountered on an
engine dyno. Drivetrain losses vary according to gear selection (testing
should usually be performed in the transmission's 1:1 gear to minimize
this factor), fluid temperatures, acceleration/ load factors, drivetrain
inertia, brake drag, the vehicle tie-down method, the weight over the
axle, and tire selection, growth, and slippage.<br />
<br />
The bottom line, and the most important point of fact, is that no matter
what type of dyno you choose to use, it is the before and after NET
result that matters. What you gain in performance from the money you’ve
spent and the changes that you have made. The actual HP number is just

<span style="font-size: x-large;">W</span>hen
the Ford Mustang first appeared not even the engineers of Ford knew
that it would still be an industry leader fifty years later. Many
concept cars never leave the design studio or if they do get out they
must still get past the critics of the annual auto show circuits, but
the Ford Mustang has proven itself repeatedly. It’s been over fifty
years since the Mustang 1 debuted as a two seat, mid-engine sports car
at the world’s fair in 1964 in Flushing Meadows, New York.<br />
Debuting
at the same time as the World’s Fair showstopper from Ford was the 1964
Mustang, the second concept car and the design that was finally chosen
went from production approval to the showroom floor in eighteen months,
as both a hardtop coupe and convertible. This fulfilled the vision of
company president, Lee Iacocca, whose dream was a small four-passenger
car that was affordable for the average person. The further goal was for
a car that had the panache of a T-Bird and the frugality of a Model T.<br />
The
Mustang hit that mark, and 22,000 units were snatched up across the
country on its first day of sales, setting the future of the Mustang in
motion. Ford sold over 260,000 Mustangs in its first year of production,
with 126,538 sold during the abbreviate 1964 ½ model year and the era
of the Pony car was born.<br />
<br />
<b>Origins</b><br />
Based
on the Ford Falcon’s unibody construction and drivetrain, Ford had a
solid platform to start with for the Mustang. Engine choices for the
first 1964 ½ to 1966 Mustangs were a 2.8-liter, in line six that
produced a meager 101 hp. Next up was Ford’s 3.3-liter inline six that
gave you an additional 15 hp, along with the associated weight of the
bigger engine. <br />
By dropping in a 4.3 liter V-8,
Ford was able to apply 164 hp to the Mustangs rear wheels, giving it an
entirely different demeanor than its six cylinder powered siblings. Not
envisioned as a sports car, mechanics and automobile aficionados were
not disappointed, however, with the addition of Ford’s legendary, two
barrel carburetor, 289 cubic inch OHV V8 that produced 210 hp. Then they
took it a little farther.<br />
The most powerful engine
available on the first generation Mustang was the venerable 289 with a
four barrel bolted on, that spun out an adrenaline raising 271
horsepower. Badged as the K-Code equipped Mustang that horsepower rating
is middle of the pack by today’s standards, but in 1964 the addition of
four barrel, small block V8’s, to lightweight unibody chassis’ led to a
new age of the affordable sports car.<br />
Offered with a
standard three speed manual on all but the K-code that came with a
four-speed manual, the four speed was offered as an option on other
models, with a three speed automatic offered as an option on all models.<br />
<br />
<b>Fast Changes</b><br />
In
1967, the competition was bringing in new models and Ford had to step
up its game and keep a fresh face in front of the public. Enter the
second generation of the Mustang that for two model years, 1967 and
1968. Using the same chassis, Ford expanded the size of the body giving
it a bit more length, and fastback got a more aggressive stance by
taking the roof slope to the trailing edge of the trunk lid. They
replaced the convertibles plastic rear window, with a two-piece glass
unit.<br />
Power trains showed a modest increase in
horsepower but the biggest addition was the 390 cubic inch, “big block”
V8, equipped with a Holley four barrel carburetor that Ford shoehorned
into the engine compartment. Making 315 horsepower, it now sat on a
track that had been widened by 2.5 inches to accommodate the larger
engine.<br />
In 1968, Ford began offering the two and
four barrel 302 cubic inch V8’s that produced 220 and 230 horsepower,
respectively. Taking out all of the stops, and with space under the hood
for even larger engines, Ford began offering 427 and 428 cubic inch big
blocks for the Mustang. Rare beasties, very few of these models can be
found today.<br />
<br />
<b>The Mustang Today</b><br />
The
first years of the Mustang saw many changes from visionary concept, to
what the Mustang became in a few short years. Perhaps it was not
designed as a sports car, but the developments over its first few years
of production have proven otherwise. Having maintained its style and
popularity for a half a century, todays Mustangs are available as lower
powered economical four cylinders or as fire breathing, 5.0-liter, 435
horsepower GT’s and still in high demand. Whichever model you choose,
owning a Mustang makes you a part of automobile history.<br />

Even though the launch of the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is over a year
away, we’re being inundated with news and rumors. The latest comes from
Ford itself this past weekend.<br />
Ford product guru Raj Nair was doing an interview during the Rolex 24
and mentioned that the new Raptor would make 450 horsepower. If that ends up being true, I nailed it!<br />
Whether on purpose or by accident, Nair let slip during an interview
with Fox Sports that the new truck would make 450 hp. We knew from the
launch that the twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 would make more power and torque
than the outgoing 6.2L V8. This horsepower would represent a healthy
increase in power.<br />

Combined with a weight savings of approximately 500 pounds, the new Raptor, according to Ford, will be a rocket-ship.
Add in the new 10-speed automatic transmission, and it might even get
better fuel economy than the previous truck (even if that’s not the
reason why you buy the Raptor).<br />
With the truck launch being so far away, that horsepower number may
change. We’ll know more as the time approaches. But Raj Nair is
definitely in the know, and we’d take his word over a bunch of other
sources. What I do know is this truck is shaping up to be quite a
monster!<br />
